Re: SARS - 04.05.03 11:50

Hallo,
ein Freund von mir ist gerade in Tibet er hat in seinem Bericht folgendes geschrieben:
"The spectre of the disease spreading across Asia and the world SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) has reached Tibet, despite no reported cases (as of Sunday evening April 27th). People can be seen walking the streets with surgical-style masks, but they would be well less than 5% of the pedestrian traffic. There are some posters to be found alerting people to the disease, but apart from the masks, there is little to show for the dangers, perceived or real.
That is until we found out today that Tibet has become a closed region.
Tour operators were informed by email that tour groups will not be allowed to enter from Nepal (and overland it's rumoured). The entry points have been closed in an attempt to reign in the spread of SARS.
Rene from Shigatse Travel, through whom we booked our group cycle across Tibet, was distraught. In the very short tourist season for Tibet this cut-off of the tourist trade is right at the beginning of the prime two weeks of his business. The only non Chinese or Tibetan faces on the streets of this city of 80,000 I saw were some of the other cycle tourists in our group of eight. When the supply of tourists runs even lower in the weeks ahead it will be even more eerie to know we are amongst the only western outsiders in the province. "
