Hallo Ivo,
I must say that it was an interesting experience. I had done only one real
24hour before, but many other rides, mostly being longer but slower. I had
organised some good support, Simon Doughty, last years nr. 3, and a
professional coach (and club-mate). He did a good job in helping me. Most
striking was that my result was nearly exactly the same as last time,
according to my computer 534kms this time, 536kms in '96. This time an
on-the-bike average of 25.5km/h, in '96 25.6km/h. Down time both times
slightly over 3 hours.
I started out with the aim to touch the goalposts, get near my personal
best. In '96 I was performing pretty good, but I had some bad years in '98
and '99, so getting back in shape was allready good.
The ride was very well organised. About each roundabout was marshalled,
sometimes by some wellknown names (like mr. Longstaff). Roads were sometimes
a bit busy, bot not annoyingly. The atmosphere was very friendly, mostly you
paused a minute while overtaking somebody for a quick exchange of some
pep-talk for the other rider. Crews not only assisted their own riders, but
also other riders, if needed to be.
The race itself. I had an excellent start, first 63miles/100kms in 3h26;
100miles/160kms in 5h45. Afterwards my pace slackened. I had a very busy
week before the race, with lack of sleep. This caused major sleep-problems
while exiting the night, really slowing me down. I even had to resort to
many small power-naps on the handelbars (standing by the roadside) and a
5-min nap ad a feeding station. So for most of the middle part of the ride I
simply plodded on. After about 20hours I really started to get moving, I
finally warmed up. So the ride on the finish-circuit was the best to be
expected, first lap (14.922miles/23,89kms) in abt. 50minutes! During the 2nd
part of the 2nd lap I had about 10kms of dip, and afterwards the finish was
really in sight, all pains disappeared and I was flying, again catching many
riders. I had studied the final part of my circuit just before the last
time-control. In 500ms there was a steep descent leading to a major road,
50ms later a steep bridge (not too fast, otherwise you fly), 10ms behind the
bridge a sharp lefthander with a manhole cover in the middle, and a dozen
meters afterwards the line for my last time-control. To add to the chaos, a
slower rider whom I was about to overtake entering the corner :-). I
finished in style, with a sprint-finish, throwing my bike forwards. Directly
after that my legs were full of acid, and Simon's picture of me leaning
against the car is not that charming.
I'll be back another time, but not next year. London-Edinburgh-London and
the Mersey 24hours will be in the same month, a bit too much for a mere
mortal like me. Exter Terrestials like Steve Abrahams will surely do the double.
